How do I get to my appointment if I can’t afford travel expenses?

Last updated: January 24, 2025

North Carolina Medicaid members with qualifying plans have access Non-Emergency Medical Travel (NEMT) benefits through ModivCare. As of writing this blog, these plans include Alliance, Partners, Carolina Complete, Healthy Blue, AmeriHealth Caritas, Trillium, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. You can also call ModivCare with the corresponding number to your plan (Mon-Sat, 7am-6pm). Mobile apps are also available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Please check with Member Services on your insurance card for additional information, as Transportation cost coverage is an NC Medicaid benefit, subject to their terms and conditions. Note that though we are not in-network with Vaya or Wellcare, they have NEMT benefits as well.

Depending on your coverage, NEMT benefits may include arranging vehicle transport or providing mileage reimbursement. If your NEMT provider requires a form signed by the provider, please bring it to your appointment.

Note that many of these transportation services require booking between 2 and 30 days prior to your appointment. Insight Carolinas does not provide or coordinate travel supports, so please confer with your plans and the NEMT provider regarding questions. ModivCare will typically require you to be ready for pick up 60 minutes prior to your scheduled time. The NEMT provider can also plan to take you home, so be sure to let them know when booking transportation and write down the number to call when the appointment is complete.
