Learn about our process
Insight Carolinas uses clinical measures, standard in the field and backed by research. The specific measures used vary by clients age, referral question, and language level. We utilize a team approach. Each client will interact with several of our clinicians through the appointment and/or pre-appointment clinical interview. There are a few exceptions to this if a particular provider is a specialist with a given referral question or if the client’s schedule results in seeing the same provider across all appointments. We are careful in selecting our team members, so you can be assured that any provider you see is well-trained, knowledgeable, and fully qualified.
The assessment process starts even prior to your in-person testing day. There are many self-report or collateral report measures that can be completed virtually in advance of the in-person testing day. The results of these pre-appointment measures help target in-person testing and maximize in-office time. We know that coming to an in-person appointment often means missing school or work, so we try to limit the assessment to one in-person session whenever possible. You may be asked to complete additional post-appointment online measures, have an additional virtual interview with you or a family member, or return to the office for additional testing if the psychologist deems it necessary.
Our reports are thorough and explain each test used, the results, the diagnoses given, why certain other diagnoses are not appropriate, and treatments that may prove useful. We also welcome clients and families to schedule feedback sessions after testing for psychoeducation on diagnoses, treatment planning, and further explanation of assessment results.
Insurance Coverage
We want clients to be able to make use of their insurance benefits to help make clinical service affordable. We are in-network with the following companies:
Kind Partnership
As part of Insight Carolinas and Kind’s collaboration to increase access to autism services in North Carolina, providers from Insight Carolinas travel from our Charlotte main office to several Kind locations across the state to bring services closer to families needing the prerequisite leveled autism diagnoses before being able to access ABA treatment.
Kind Behavioral Health was formerly known as Carolina Center for ABA (CCABA).
We reserve several testing days each quarter for testing children 7 and under at select Kind locations.
Our partnership is non-exclusive.
Families are still welcome to choose another service provider even if they were seen at a Kind clinic.
Families can also receive services with Kind if a child is diagnosed by another qualified provider.
Many of our Kind clients use their insurance benefits for payment, however, if they have an insurance that we are not in-network, are uninsured, or otherwise wish to waive use of insurance, we offer a special discounted private pay rate for our qualified Kind referrals.

Clinical Assessment Q/A
-
An assessment can be helpful if you are experiencing new, worsening, or persistent concerns with things such as mood, attention, relationships. It can also be helpful for young children who seem to be “late bloomers” to determine if a developmental delay is present and to maximize gains with early intervention. An assessment can give the clarity and insight you need to have informed care.
-
Not necessarily but having an assessment can help guide treatment decisions and focus intervention. Certain therapies are intended to target specific concerns such as TF-CBT for PTSD, DBT for Borderline Personality Disorder and depression, and mindfulness for anxiety. If you are seeking ABA Therapy insurance will only cover the services if the child has a leveled Autism diagnosis from a qualified professional - which in North Carolina is typically limited to a licensed psychologist or a developmental pediatrician.
-
For our general clinical assessments the in-person appointment is a single 1-2 hour appointment but there are digital assessments you will need to complete in advance that will also take 1-3 hours.
-
While this varies somewhat depending on the reason for testing, age, etc. You can expect to be greeted by a staff member and given a verbal overview of what we’ll be doing and with whom. Clinical assessment includes cognitive testing and also an interview. Specific tests used and the types of tasks involved vary greatly depending on the reason for testing. If you have concerns or want to know more about your specific appointment in advance, please reach out to our intake team.
-
While we try to minimize wait times our services are in high demand so this is an ever changing answer. Please contact our office directly regarding our next available appointments based on the service you are seeking. It is important to note that while scheduling with our office is a process, it is one that is entirely dependent on how quickly you complete the necessary paperwork needed to obtain an appointment. Forms and assessments can take several hours to complete. If there are any forms or assessments that you are missing, a member of our scheduling team will let you know via text message or email.
-
We can provide more precise timelines at the time of booking and on the assessment day, but generally we return completed reports for clinical assessments within three weeks of the testing date. We know that timely results are important in accessing needed treatments fast.
-
For admissions testing you may have any adult you wish accompany the child and remain in the waiting room during testing provided you have signed all relevant paperwork in advance.
For psychological testing, we do require that a parent or legal guardian bring the child to appointment unless we have a Release of Information on file granting permission to bring them to the appointment. There is a portion of the appointment that involves a ‘parent interview’ so it is important that someone is present that has knowledge of the client and what they are experiencing.
-
Read over your evaluation and share it with your other providers such as your PCP, pediatrician, psychiatrist, and counselor/therapist. If it is for a child, it may also be beneficial to share part or all of the report with the school to assist in obtaining school-based support. If you would like further clarification on something in your report or for help with next steps, we encourage you to schedule a feedback session with your testing provider or one of our therapists.

Insight Carolinas is in-network with BCBS, AETNA, Optum/United Healthcare, Cigna, MedCost and CBHA in the private insurance realm and Alliance, Amerihealth Caritas, Carolina Complete, Healthy Blue, Partners, Trillium, United Community Plan. We also accept out of network benefits and private pay. You may have a copay, co-insurance, or a deductible to meet depending on your coverage. We also are able to work on a sliding scale for those without insurance benefits. Part of our mission is expanding access to care.

We understand seeking assessment can be anxiety provoking, but we have years practice and thousands of assessments of experience. You can relax and know that we will ask the questions that we need and do the tests we need to get the relevant information for informed diagnoses.
You don’t have to remember everything or loop everyone in who knows you or your child. As long as you complete what is asked of you, we will have the information we need to accurately diagnose and recommend treatments.
