Does health insurance cover psychological assessments?

In most cases, yes. According to the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA) and subsequent amendments, health insurance plans are required to offer mental health and substance use treatment benefits in a manner that is “no more restrictive” than limitations to medical and surgical benefits.

So in other words, if you have mental health benefits with your health insurance plan, you should be able to access them in the same manner you would for physical health benefits. This can vary among plans, as some require prior authorizations, have limits on sessions, require some amount of cost-sharing (e.g. deductible, co-pay, co-insurance)... but the good news is that your health insurance is not permitted to make it any harder or more expensive because you are seeking a psychological assessment when compared to another health specialty. The best way to make sure what is available to you is to call your Member Benefits on your insurance card and ask.

If you come to see us at Insight Carolinas, we can provide an estimate of your benefits as a courtesy, but it is important that you are aware of the benefits associated with your plan. We are happy to create a Good Faith Estimate so you have a better sense of cost. To schedule with us, call or text  704-251-9084.
