Does medicaid cover psychological assessments?
In most cases, yes. In the state of North Carolina, medicaid beneficiaries are permitted to have psychological assessments without the need of referral or prior authorization. There are some limitations, such as how often or how much can be assessed, but with a referral question in mind such as “Is my child autistic?”, “Do I have ADHD?”, or “Is my child sad or depressed?”, this can usually be answered within the medicaid benefit allotment. If you’re not sure what your question is, that’s okay. Speaking with one of our friendly staff can help you determine if a psychological assessment is right for you.
Medicaid plans can vary in the ways they administer benefits, so we recommend checking in with your plan for your specific benefits. Your medicaid card should have a phone number for members to call with benefits questions. If you are in North Carolina, there is a list of health plans here.
